Who We Are

The Monona Historical Society was organized in 1967, when a group of individuals felt the need to have a museum to preserve relics of the area. Its purpose was to preserve the area history and artifacts for the future. The group received its first charter as a nonprofit organization in 1968. It was incorporated in 1970.

For several years it accumulated items until in 1970 the home of Mrs. H. H. Smith on South Egbert Street was acquired. The Monona Historical Museum opened in 1971. The Victorian house was built around 1900. Several rooms are furnished from this time period. There is an extensive collection of art work of Monona people, small farm equipment, kitchen ware, war relics as well as furniture and clothing of the past.

In 1980 the back porch was enclosed and expanded into an office area. In 1992 a 20 ft. x 20 ft. addition was designated for the carving room and the Elmer F. Marting Woodcarving display, "The World's Largest Known Display of Handcarved Chains". This also serves as the connecting room to the most recent addition in 2006. The 36 ft. x 80 ft. building has two large rooms for display of Monona memorabilia and the housing of research materials. The Willa Helwig History Center as the addition is named, is busy most afternoons with people searching for their family ties, reading the old newspapers and looking through the many folders of information of the local area.

There are no salaries paid, and expenses are met through donations, and some money from the county and city.
